Answers to the most-searched questions about FSP, Approbation, funding and our courses.
The FSP is an oral exam at the medical chamber (approx. 60 min.) consisting of three parts: a patient-history interview with an actor-patient, writing a doctor’s letter, and a professional discussion with the examiner. In most federal states it is a mandatory requirement for the Approbation of international doctors.
The exam fee varies considerably: NRW Nordrhein approx. €430, NRW Westfalen-Lippe approx. €400, Bavaria approx. €350–450, Berlin approx. €420, Hesse approx. €650, Baden-Württemberg approx. €420, Saxony approx. €590, Mecklenburg-VP approx. €700, Bremen approx. €530, Saarland approx. €450, Rhineland-Palatinate approx. €470. Translation costs may also apply.
In most federal states a C1 certificate (e.g. Telc Deutsch C1 Medizin) is required to register for the FSP. The certificate does not replace the FSP – it is the access requirement. The FSP itself additionally tests medical specialist communication.
Hamburg/Berlin: 6–10 weeks. NRW, Bavaria: 8–16 weeks. Baden-Württemberg: 10–20 weeks. Recommendation: register as soon as the course begins so the appointment and course preparation overlap.
Telc C1 Medizin: a general language certificate (C1 level, written & oral) – an access requirement. FSP: an official exam at the medical chamber, specific to everyday medical practice. Famed: recognised as an FSP equivalent only in Hesse. In other federal states the FSP must be taken.
No – the FSP is only valid for the federal state in which you take the exam. If you move to another federal state, a new FSP is usually required unless you hold a nationally valid Approbation.
Yes. Most medical chambers allow several attempts, usually with a 3–6 month waiting period between attempts. We offer a focused follow-up course for the second attempt – with a precise analysis of weak points.
Exam fees per federal state: Saarland €670–870, Saxony from €170 (with a work permit) or €490 (without), NRW €950–1,150, Hesse €1,250–1,450, Baden-Württemberg €1,000–1,200. Add to this the costs for translations, document review and equivalence assessment, which can increase the total considerably.
Depending on the federal state and completeness of documents: 4–20 months. Saxony and Hamburg: tend to be faster (4–12 months). Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg: often 8–20 months. If a Kenntnisprüfung is required, the process extends by a further 6–12 months.
